Previous reports suggested Forte was a real threat to skip training camp time because he wants a long-term deal. The fourth-year player is owed just $555,000 in the final season on his rookie contract. Forte has played hurt with the Bears and is coming off a year in which he established himself as Chicago's best offensive player. The Bears should still make locking Forte up a priority. It's been confirmed that they're interested in doing so.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Forte racked up 74 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries in the third exhibition game. But his preseason as a whole has been quiet, and that's a good thing. He's healthy, in a contract year and set to push for 300 touches once again. Forte is a top-12 fantasy back even though Marion Barber projects to vulture some goal-line work.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>"We should be in pretty good shape," Smith said. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that Forte "could be back in as few as two weeks," but that he'll "more likely (be) sidelined for about a month." It sounds like the Bears expect Forte back if they make the playoffs, or perhaps by Week 17. It'd probably take a borderline miraculous recovery for Forte to return before then.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Coach Lovie Smith wouldn't rule out the possibility in Wednesday's pre-practice press conference, so Forte isn't helping the Bears' feeble attempt at gamesmanship. We would not expect Forte back until Week 17 at the earliest.
